Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd is a legendary American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in the mid-1960s. Originally named My Backyard, the group, featuring Ronnie Van Zant on vocals and Gary Rossington on guitar, went through several name changes and lineup shifts before solidifying their sound and name in 1969. Known for their bluesy southern rock with a touch of country twang, they were frontrunners in the Southern rock movement of the 70s. Their music was characterized by powerful vocals, a three-guitar attack, and lyrics that often touched on working-class struggles and Southern pride. Hits like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird” remain enduring classics, but the band’s trajectory was tragically cut short by a plane crash in 1977 that claimed the life of Ronnie Van Zant and several other members.
